Karaoke Thoughts

The origin of Karaoke has become the 'stuff of legends'. There are many accounts regarding where and how it was created and what the word means.

My favorite origin story is that it started in a small pub in Japan whose owner faced the dilemma of what to do when his scheduled entertainment could not arrive. It is said that he made tapes of accompanyment music and the patrons sang to them.

The word itself is derived from two other Japanese words, 'Karappo' meaning 'Empty' and 'Okesutura' meaning 'Orchestra'.

Since it's inception, Karaoke has grown to be much more than just a 'passing fad'. Millions of people worldwide have enjoyed singing along to their favorite songs and entering competitions for prizes ranging from a t-shirt to the recent 'gift of stardom' on such shows as Canadian Idol, American Idol and Nashville Star to name a few.

Karaoke has been 'dissed' by the uninitiated as a way for the untalented to pretend to be a star. Those who claim this are, oddly enough, not regular attendees of shows. I've heard talent ranging from the mediocre right on through to professional quality and a wonderful variety in between.

It's not about the talent. It's about enjoyment. Those who sing Karaoke regularly find it to be relaxing and almost theraputic - Like a visit to a skilled masseuse but far less expensive.

We also dismiss the 'star wannabe' factor as there are a LOT of stars out there who are not deserving of the fame. There are a lot of professional recording artists who do not have great vocal talent. Compare the sweet instrument that is Mariah Carey's voice to that of Bob Dylan. Mariah has a beautiful gift of voice but no one could argue the fact that Bob Dylan's songwriting and lyrics have affected more people more deeply.

If you've been thinking of trying Karaoke but were too shy to follow through, just go for it! Every single singer in that room has gone through the same thing. When you sing your first song, they know and understand what you are feeling. Your audience is not judging you on technique and poise. They cheer you on because you're doing something we all enjoy in the universal language of Music.
